Do Diet Sodas Cause Diabetes?

Everyone knows that drinking sugar laden soda isn’t really healthy.  Sugar-loaded drinks have been proven to increase the risk of developing diabetes.  But does drinking diet soda have the same risks as regular soda?

Both of us like to drink diet sodas, so when we saw this article we wanted to learn more.  Harvard University did a study that was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, looking at the dietary habits and medical conditions developed in 40,000 men over 20 years of age.

The study shows that diet soda does not appear to raise the risk of diabetes.  This is most definitely a positive outcome, but in a study like this it is hard to be sure whether people are drinking more diet sodas because they are already at risk of diabetes.  But, if you control for obesity, since there is no additional increased risk for diabetes.  The study additionally showed that drinking coffee on a regular basis does lower the risk of developing diabetes. (which is great news for us!)

The message here once again is moderation.  So if you are drinking 1-2 diet sodas a day, there is nothing right now to show that it increases your risks for diabetes or does serious harm.
